How to install openG VIs manually?

My Q is the following,. Is there any procedural documents (links) describing how to install the openG VIs without (repeat without) using VIPM ?

I have endured much frustration with installing and using VIPM in all its flavors (not being an adanced power user of LabVIEW amplifies the problem.)

I do wish to use the openG VI's (if they are open and free) and would be interested in finding out how to install them manually.

Thanks in advance

Hi John,

I'm sorry to hear that you had a frustrating experience with VIPM and trying to get OpenG installed, especially since one of the main reasons that VIPM exists is to make it very easy to install the OpenG VIs on your LabVIEW version.

Unfortunately there is no procedure for how to manually install the OpenG VIs. And, this process is much more difficult than simply using VIPM. The OpenG libraries have dependencies between them and VIPM automates the process of correctly resolving these. Also, each package contains information inside of it that describes where and how it needs to be installed. And, many packages are installed slightly differently on different versions of LabVIEW.

Where did you get stuck installing and using VIPM? Did you have a chance to watch the tutorial video on Getting Started with VIPM and Installing OpenG Libraries into LabVIEW? Please let me know. We care a great deal about solving any problems that you encountered and are committed to making VIPM a very usable product.

Also, which packages, specifically, are you having trouble installing? I just recalled that you posted on OpenG.org some questions on the OpenG Class Templates for Object-Oriented Programming.

Thank you,

Jim,

While this is the case is there any way to setup VIPM to use a local repository and download the packages separately? I work in a secure facility. The lab area does not have direct access to the internet and we are often forced to install these packages the hard way. Is there a setup within the application susch that this can be resolved for use in our lab development machines? We had a contractor use the Open G libs extensively and we now need to update this project to add features and we would like to use a newer version of LabVIEW as well a bring the system to more current open G libs when we update the project.

Regards,

Bob

Hi Bob,

Your use case sounds like it's exactly what we're working to address with VIPM Enterprise (here's a quick glimpse).

If you'd like to participate in the private beta, we'd love your feedback and help in putting the product through the ringer.

If you can install VIPM, you can install the OpenG Packages from a local source (i.e. portable hard drive / flash drive). You still have to download the OpenG VIs from sourceforge yourself, using this link, but once you get them all on disk, VIPM can import them and install them on a machine not connected to the internet. I know because its how I operate.

You'll also want to look for release notices on the VIPM or OpenG pages to know when new or new versions of packages have been released.

You can add any packages you want to VIPM manually without the internet. Just download them from sourceforge [from a different internet enabled machine]. Share them locally and then in VIPM select File>>Add Package(s) to Package List...

Also if you currently have VIPM Pro you can put all your packages into one VIPC file and move them around as a unit and associate them with a project to maintain revision control.

Howdy Michael,

I'm having a bit of trouble trying to do this, can you please point me in the right direction? I went to the sourceforge page linked above, and got the latest version of each package.

I've got two problems:

1st, there is a package that I can't seem to find on Sourceforge, but most of the libraries have as a dependency, "nirsc_html_help_common". I find some mention of this on OpenG.org, but I can't find this package anywhere.

2nd, even on packages that don't list nirsc_html_help_common as a dependency, i.e. "ogrsc_dynamicpalette-0.19-1", I get an error on install. When I show error details, I get:

Main Package Name: ogrsc_dynamicpalette-0.19-1

Package Name with Error: ogrsc_dynamicpalette-0.19-1

Error Message: VIPM could not install the package ogrsc_dynamicpalette-0.19-1 .

Error Code: 8

Error Source: Open/Create/Replace File in ZLIB Read Compressed File__ogtk.vi->ZLIB Get File__ogtk.vi->ZLIB Extract File__ogtk.vi->6D0689F28DD7BE0BCD0E80065EA34CBA->A372D3CDD80953F2C77D92AB7843F7C5->EE9916E14E5E87B2B3DDDCBBC17E1E67.lvlib:10E1CC711B592F43A8612F7B0AC60602->EE9916E14E5E87B2B3DDDCBBC17E1E67.lvlib:5F5E8A59BC788843F54AE7DA5D85B279->0190AB7979881BA9D862B204F53AEF92->VIPM Main Window.vi

I'm using VIPM 3.0 (build 1280), and Labview 2009.

Thanks for any help you can give!

Hey Cary,

Here's a copy of the nirsc_html_help_common-2.0-1.ogp package. Download and double-click on it. You can then add it to your VIPM package list and/or install it.

nirsc_html_help_common_2.0_1.ogp

One you do this, you should be able to install the rest of the OpenG Packages you downloaded.

I hope this helps.

Thanks,

-Jim

Thanks Jim!

This seems to have fixed everything, and I've been able to install all the packages I was interested in.

Thanks again for your help!
