not seeing wood for trees... the file was actually on the computer. Removing it did the job, thanks!
Funny enough, a colleague of mine was struggling with a similar issue, so this worked as well for him.
Followup question: can the installation routine of VIPM make sure that the files in the cache folder have appropriate settings / ownerships, so this issue can be mitigated?
